Having bed bugs is every homeowner's nightmare. They are masters of hide-and-seek and have become immune to many basic over-the-counter remedies. Fortunately, they have one major weakness: they cannot survive extreme temperatures. In this blog, we explain how to effectively tackle bed bugs using heat, steam, and cold.
1. The Power of Heat Treatment
Bed bugs (and their eggs!) cannot survive temperatures above 60°C. A professional heat treatment is often the most effective method because it treats the entire room simultaneously.
How it works: Specialized heaters raise the room temperature to a level where the insects literally dry out.
The advantage: The heat reaches even the smallest cracks in walls and floors where traditional pesticides often fail to penetrate.
2. Getting to Work with Steam
A powerful industrial steamer is your best friend in the battle against bed bugs.
Focus on seams: Use the steamer on mattress seams, bed frames, and along baseboards.
Watch the temperature: The steam must make direct contact and stay hot enough. Move the steamer head slowly over suspicious areas to ensure the heat penetrates deep enough.
3. Freezing Your Belongings
Not everything can be tossed in the washing machine at 60°C—think of books, shoes, or delicate fabrics. In those cases, the freezer is your lifesaver.
The 72-hour rule: Place the items in a sealed bag in the freezer at a minimum temperature of -18°C.
Patience is a virtue: Leave the items for at least 2 to 4 days to ensure that even the resilient eggs are frozen solid.
Expert Tip: Combine these methods for the best results. A multi-angled approach is the fastest way to a bug-free home.
